Located on Holter Lake within the Gates of the Mountains Wilderness on the Upper Missouri River lies Mann Gulch the site of Mann Gulf where lightening struck on August 5, 1949 with a tragic end for 13 smoke jumpers and 5,000 acres of forest. Lessons learned from this wildfire was a turning point in the history of wildland fire fighting and wildfire management in the United States.
